I'd like to use moviemaker to edit video for text based powerpoint
presentations, and to put the presentations on DVD. Now in the process of
choosing a camcorder, I'd welcome any adivce on which of the available
comsumer-end camcorder formats is preferable over another for this task.

The digital8 and mini-DV camcorders are the two that record in full digital
video, and the mini-DV is the more normal... the digital8 helps those who
have libraries of analog Hi8 and 8mm tapes as it plays those too.

So as much as I like the idea of mini DVD, I gather it's not a good choice in
terms of compatibility with most editing software, including MovieMaker?

Yes, the MPEG-2 files are compressed to about 1/3 of the size of DV-AVI
files and Movie Maker doesn't work with the files directly.

Check the Importing Source Files > Video > Discs page of my website to see
the hurdles you need to go over to get them into Movie Maker.
