Call interrupt while on-line

Is there a satisfactory software interrupt of the telephone line when having
only 1 telephone line for modem (computer) and desk phone?

I bought (this is for a friend Catch-a-call hardware but it has to go back
since it requires call waiting. That makes it all much too expensive.
