The Social Market Foundation said forcing people to pay a fee for an appointment could help the NHS cope in the tight financial times ahead.

The group said it would not breach the values of the NHS as charges already applied to dentistry and prescriptions.

Fortunately, both the government and doctors said they were against such a move.

The think-tank said the NHS was facing a tough couple of years.

Question is - how much do these so-called think tanks charge?

This one's called The Social Market Foundation, that seems nice and annonymous doesn't it?

They probably got paid oodles of wonga to do nine months research to come up with the idea 'Paying GP's for an appointment would help finance the NHS'

Brilliant! Where do they find this creme de la creme of intelligentsia, these people who have their finger on the pulse of financial wizardry?

I can see their worth, never in a million years would a lowly pleb such as I ever come up with such a brilliant idea.

How many in their team I wonder?

Who aproves their payments I wonder?

I also wonder what the next period of research involving deep thought will come up with?

I'll offer a couple of suggestions:

Letting more patients have access to the more expensive cancer drugs would increase patients' lifespans and in some instances preserve lives.

Training and more financing more GP's would reduce patients' waiting times for an appointment.

Pretty good for a first attempt eh? :)

Please make my cheque for £12K payable to...

politics ... I'm treading carefully

Nice thought, not unheard of, but one has to get the "drug" passed the threshold approval by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

The NHS can't afford it if a drug "costs to much" you then gonna have a fight to get it ... I for one blame the drug companies, but hey, they gotta make a profit, ain't they?

Does anyone have the same thought as me.Andthat is that the country is going bankrupt,or even bankrupt as we speak. We seem to be asked to pay for every thing even though we pay our taxes.Just where is the money going. With regard to the health service,if only they would get rid of all the,or at least some of them, managers, advisers, out side contractors and sell off some of the art work that has been bought, maybe that would help. And if this lot gets in for another 5 years then we might be seeing the poor living on the streets begging.

historian :(

Yes I do :) The country has been bankrupt since the end of WW2 at least since the Americans saved our butts and handed us a bill for billions of dollars for doing so.

We still owe them the money, apparently.

We do don't we? Bugger.

The usual places - MP's expenses, think tanks and repairs to the M6 motorway

In all serious, I thoroughly agree with you. Thatcher started the rot and Blair compounded it.
