My laptop's BIOS has a facility to calibrate my battery. What does this
mean? And is it worthwhile? It takes five hours to perform and runs down my
system. The manual recommends that I do it once per month. Is that right?

batteries true capacity fades over time, say for example from 200 units of
charge to 100 units of charge, with recalibrating each 1% of charge
indicated will mean 1 unit of charge, not the 2 units of charge associated
with a new battery

Plain English Translation:

Re-calibrating allows your laptop to better estimate the actual charge left
in your battery so it won't just all of the sudden go from 50% to "Replace
battery now!"
