Calender shows at the top eg 01 April - I want Sat 1st April how?

it's controlled by your windows long date format - control panel, regional
settings.
 
Thank you, Diane - I found it and looked to change it to put the day eg
Saturday ahead of the date but it was not an option in the drop down - any
ideas? I want to read it as for example Saturday 1st April Thanks

You need to add "dddd" to the format. (Without the quotes)

Not all your possible choices appear in the drop-down. You can enter
whatever you want. Make your field look like this:

dddd, dd MMMM, yyyy
