I'm using Outlook 2003 and I would like to be able to choose calendars by
years: I find when I navigate back and forth in calendar I'm constantly going
too far. I don't need historical information; I'd like to delete past
months.

You may not need historical information but many others do. Why not just
archive the folder once the year is over. Any recurring appointments will
not archive but you can see them in the active calendar.

I, for one, do not want any information removed from my Outlook without my
specific instructions.

Use the navigation calendars to move around - pull the separator bar inward
to show more calendars.
