All of the sudden the basic calculator is no longer on my
computer. The shortcuts that used to go to it remain but
it is no longer there. What can I do?

Calculator is located in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder as calc.exe. If
yours is not there, try searching for calc.exe and if you find it, copy it
back to C:\WINDOWS\system32. If calculator is truly gone -- probably an
unwitting mistake on your part, no big deal -- you can reinstall it from
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Look on the left for Add/Remove Windows
Components.

By the way, are you aware of the snazzy "Power Calculator" available from
Microsoft? "With this PowerToy you can graph and evaluate functions as well
as perform many different types of conversions." You can get it here:

Go to control panel--add/remove programs and on the left side add/remove
windows components. You should delete them, then go back and re-install them.
