Using Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or Microsoft Excel I
have had multiplication values be wrong. 6x.08=.46?????
This problem has been on two different computers. Am I
doing something wrong. What do I need to change.
Most likely it's the difference between what is displayed and the underlying
values in the cells. For example, you may have chosen to display numbers to
2 decimal places. Suppose the number in a cell were actually 0.077; this
would be displayed as 0.08. However, when you multiply by 6, the result
would be 0.462, which would be displayed as 0.46. Calculations always use
the underlying values.
To see what is really happening, increase the number of decimal places that
are displayed. The best way to avoid this happening is to use the ROUND
function in your formulas where appropriate. An alternative is to be found
on the "Tools > Options > Calculations tab", where you can set "Precision as
displayed". Be warned that this is a global setting. Personally, I do not
recommend its use, but the choice is yours.
