Hi all,
I have a crimper, punch-down tool, rj45 plugs, shrouds and some cat5 cable. What are the colour codes and where is pin 1 on the plug?
Hopefully

Thanks for your replies!
All I need now is a large magnifying glass and steady hands.

Depends what the cable is for

If connecting to a Hub, you want both ends A

If connecting PC's to each other, you want one end A, one end B to make a crossover

Dear christopherposthill,
Definately, but I enjoy getting things to work and friends and family will probably want to network sometime.
Thanks for your advice,

Making your own is flexible (make whatever size you like) and cheaper if you make enough of them.

In reality, doesn't matter what colours go where as long as they the same both ends.

Magnifying glass? Pffffft, if I can manage it, anybody can :p

Try doing one in a class full of rowdy kids ;)

Dear floppyboot stomp,
Thanks for your reply. I taught physics for 32 years before getting out early. I often wired while they worked, but I think the wires seem to get thinner as you get older. I also have a red/ green deficiency. Fortunately I also have two sharp-eyed daughters to spot the colours.
Cheers

Hello,
I have made up cables with rj45 plugs and surprisingly they work. I want to wire two sockets but there is nothing on them to indicate pin numbers. Help please.

Stupid or just old,
Floppybootstomp answered this question ages ago. The colour code makes no difference as long as it is the same at either end. I guess you could rewire your house with phase and neutral colours reversed as long as you were consistent.
Cheers
