Cable Modem working hard.

My cable modem never seems to stop running. Is there something built into XP
or available from elsewhere that will allow me to see what its doing?
I'm running Zone Alarm and Adaware and neither report any problems.

What does 'running' mean?
If you mean the lights on the front of the modem are flickering, thats
normal

If you check your 'Connections' you can elect to show the connection icon in
the task bar when connected, opening this will give a broad indication of
traffic.

The 'send/receive' lights sometimes flicker very fast for long periods of
time even when I'm not running I.E. and doing something else that does not
involve the internet.
Can you please clarify 'Connections' and how to show the icon on the task bar?

Start>Connect To>Show all connections
Opens your network connections
Properties of the connection: tick show Icon when connected

Once the icon is in the task bar, a double click will bring up a status
window

Thanks DL I've done that and it tells me what I already know ----- that
information is being exchanged. What I'd really like to know is what
information and with whom? Can you help?

Well you have ZoneAlarm, which I dont use, perhaps its logs or other options
will show to what you are connected / sending / receiving

Another thing you could try;
Booting in safe mode and see if it still occurs, if it doesnt it might
indicate some app/service is autostarting and initiating

What programs are running in the background that may need Internet connection? Such as Windows Update, Virus/Adware programs updating and so on.

I've had cable service for years and the modem's Send/Rec lights always seem to flicker, plus I run my telephone (Vonage) over my Internet connection as well.

The "NetPerSec" application will tell you the amount of data flowing.
Your system might be receiving updates from Microsoft, or any program
you've installed which has a "check for updates" option could be using
the network.

I seem to recall that ZoneAlarm would show the icons of the applications
which were actively using the network, but I no longer use ZoneAlarm, as
my company has migrated us to another product.
