I have high-speed cable internet (Comcast) and would like to get a FAX
program that would work on cable.

Anyone aware of such a program?

I know I can connect my computer back up to my telephone line and use the
FAX that way, but would much rather not do that.

Thanks,

Hound Dog

That's how fax modems work, over the phone line. It's not a software issue,
it's a question of how the hardware works.

I'm well aware as how FAX modems work, I've been using one for more than 8
years, but time marches on and more and more people are going to the use of
high speed cable hookups instead of the telephone line.

I repeat: Is anyone aware of FAX software that works with the NEW
technology?

Thanks,

Hound Dog

No. The best you can do via your internet connection is to subscribe to
a server on the "net" which will send/receive faxes on your behalf. You
send/receive files, they handle the conversion to a FAX and send via
phone lines for you. Easily find these services via Google or Yahoo
service directory. An example company is eFax.com that even has a free
service available.

Until you see the world sending faxes to IP addressees rather than to
phone numbers, phone numbers and telephones it will be.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

This may not help in your sending, but, I personally use Efax for my fax
number. It's a great way to receive faxes especially if you travel. The
faxes are emailed to you.

However, to send a fax, I still use the old fashioned way. You may be able
send faxes with the Plus feature of Efax, I am not sure. Check it out
www.efax.com

I have been using the free version for years, with no problems.

You're aware of how fax modems work, but not aware that
cable subscription lines are NOT CONNECTED TO THE
TELEPHONE NETWORK? Not aware that two different and
MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE technologies are involved? What
are the magical properties, do you suppose, that would
enable an analog fax modem to connect to cable lines?
BTW, as far as broadband in general is concerned, it may,
in some instances, be possible to use fax facilities in
conjunction with ADSL lines, but those are, after all,
part of the general telephone network.

If you are using Vonage for long distance and local calls, you can connect
an external fax machine to their equipment and fax over broadband. Of
course you have to be a Vonage service subscriber. I didn't mention this or
e-fax last night as the OP seemed to be looking for software to do the trick
as opposed to being interested in a pay service. www.vonage.com

Of course, this doesn't diminish in the least your comments or mine for that
matter with regard to analog fax modems.

If you are using a Printer/Scanner/Fax machine (mine is HP 3330), then
the printer software enables you to FAX directly from the computer.

Did not read my posts did you?

I DO NOT want to have a telephone line hooked to my computer. I repeat: I DO
NOT WANT TO HAVE A TELEPHONE LINE HOOKED TO MY COMPUTER.

That is one reason I went to cable.

Another reason is because cable is faster than a telephone line.

Mutually exclusive technologies are not involved in anything I was asking
about.

Please read, and try to understand the posts before putting in you two cents
worth.

These are your words JERK!!!

I have high-speed cable internet (Comcast) and would like to get a FAX
program that would work on cable.

Michael
I did not say "over broadband" (for a multi-purpose printer etc.).
My set up uses a telephone line for my broadband connection AND the
same telephone line is used for the pinter/fax connection. I send
faxes from the computer, via the printer.

JD

I understand, JD, but the OP specifically stated he did not want to do this
over telephone lines, that he wanted to do this over a broadband connection.

In fact Hound Dog was even more specific. He said Cable, as in Optical cable
(not DSL, as in telephone lines), so I can't see how JD's comments are in
any way relevant.

Then you need to use, as told you in previous posts, an internet-based
faxing service that does the phone part of FAXing on your behalf.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
