C2D E6600 Overclock....

After my recent heat problem, and the subsequent solving of it, my CPU is hardly working at all:)

So I was wandering........Should I have a play with a little overclocking?

This is my set-up at the mo...

As long as the process doesn't require Bill Gates' knowledge or money ,I may attempt it.
And as long as it can be explained in simple steps that even I can understand.

Your thoughts and advice, please.
 
Firstly I see that you have Intel Speedstep enabled in your BIOS, as its currently working at 1.6GHz - so I'd like to see what your temps are like when its running at its full speed of 2.4GHz both at idle and at 100% usage first.

I would also like to know the rest of the specs - make/model of motherboard/RAM/Cooler + Fan etc as well - plus what additional case cooling you have.

Having said all that - it should OC safely with little effort to at least 3GHz, and possibly more dependant on some of the above. :thumb:

Other Spec you asked for....

Gigabyte 965P-DS3
2x1024 DDR2-Sdram, Corsair
Stock Cooler + 3 extra case fans
(I know I may need a non-stock cooler to OC)
 
You need to go into the BIOS to make the Speedstep adjustment, plus a few others before starting the overclock.

THIS rough guide gives you a basic idea under 'Tidying up your Bios' as to some of the settings to adjust.

I suggest you consult your DS3 manual for information about where to find these settings in your BIOS. ;)

Use CoreTemp for the temps at this stage.
 
That is a damn good guide there. Overclocking is like a Scientific experiment you got to play around with it until you get it right. I got a lot of errors when I overclocked my 6600.

I take it you have got your pc running nice and stable now?

Well yes but only at stock speed 2.4ghz at the moment with the Q6600

it kept on crashing at 3.0ghz but I couldn't work out if it was because of the CPU or the memory at 1333mhz.
atm I am taking no risks
 
woo hoo it is stable so far on 3.01 ghz!!

I've had to put 1.73v into the memory!! the temp at 100% load core 0 = 67C
