I get the message:
16 bit Windows Subsystem
c:windows\system32\autoexec.nt.
The system file is not suitable for running MS DOS and Microsoft
Windows
applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

I've tried installing a DOSBox, but it did nothing for the game. I
Believe it is a Windows 98 system and It should work - I've installed
The Sims on that particular computer BEFORE.
I now have the Sims 2 on that Same computer, and no longer need that
program. Therefore, I thought I could re-load The Sims onto this
computer. It is an HP with an Intel processor. It is a 32 MB or higher.
It has a DirectX 4.0 or 5.0 compatible video card. It also still has
"Install Wizard" on the computer. No installation program allows this
game to be installed. The reason for this is incredibly peculiar. A
year ago I still had the Sims on the computer I am speaking of. Then I
got the Sims 2, and removed it. This computer is FOR SURE compatible
with the Sims running system requirements.
THe only thing that may possibly have thrown off the system is moving
the computer from the downstairs level of our home to the upstairs
office. I feel that this may have done something, however the
installation thing should still be located on the computer. It installs
the Sims 2 perfectly fine on the same computer. As well as the other
games, including Livin' Large, will install on the same computer.
Something must obviously be wrong with the settings on teh computer. I
have it set on a 16-bit true color, and have tried 32-bit true color:
neither of which work.
When I installed the DOSBox, the same error came up. I cannot seem to
understand why all of hte other games will load, but not that one. It
is not on the computer allready, either. The errors that come up for
the other games (when they start the Installshield) is "No other
versions of The Sims found on this computer". So...My question is why
won't JSUT THIS GAME load? It is the original Sims game. It is in it
case, and hasn't been removed or scratched. I have the original box,
but it is about 6 to 7 years old, so the warranty has run out. I need
to know if it is just my game or if it is my computer...and if it is
the computer, what we can do to fix it.
I am hoping that someone can help me, because this is getting no where.
My father and I have both attempted installing the game, and it is not
working. I wish to learn the dilemma soon.
Thank you very much for your time and help, I wish to know this as soon
as possible.
Thank you!

Hi Evanescent_Poetic_Justice08,

Here's an easy method to solve that error:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm#16bit

If that doesn't correct the issue, try this manual method:

1. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\repair
Right-Click and Copy the file named: autoexec.nt *

2. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\System32
Right-Click in that window to Paste the file
(Answer yes if prompted to replace existing file)

* Note: If the file autoexec.nt doesn't exist on your system
right click the link below and select the "Save Target As.."
option to save the file in C:\WINDOWS\System32
