I have C-Media AC97 audio device installed but now doesn't work. Apparently
been that way for several months but I didn't know.

Device manager says 'This device cannot start (code 10).' It also says that
drivers are installed and working properly. The device shows a ! mark in a
yellow circle beside its name. I believe that that indicates a hardware
conflict.

I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling it and I have installed the
latest driver from Microsoft update. What else should I try? Any help much
appreciated.

make sure the audio is enabled in the bios I am assuming that it is an
onboard device

Not sure about your problem specifically but don't use windows update to
update drivers. You need to get the drivers from the manufacturer of the
sound device, whether it is part of the motherboard or a plug-in card.

Yes my c-media AC97 stopped working when I installed the Microsoft driver
update and rolling back the driver restored sound but not microphone
function. I willo never install another optional update from Microsoft -

Sorry, but the amateur in this equation is YOU.

Hello
I have the same problem (C-Media AC97)
Have you managed to fix it yet?
Tried all that you have too...
Very frustrating...

The correct method is to install the drivers that were provided for the
system. The drivers will normally be found on the CD that cam with the
computer. IF you can't find that CD, visit the Manufacturers web site
and get them there.

Got sound working by rolling back the driver.
Tried updating again & C-Media still didnt work so rolled back the driver
again.
No problems at the moment.
