I have a 105GB internal disk drive that only has 5.96 GB free. I don't
know what is taking up so much space. I think it might be my backup
files, but, I can't find them to delete the old ones. I obviously don't
know too much about computers and appreciate the help. Thank you.

Have you ever run Disk Cleanup? If not, you should.

Click the start orb and type CLEANUP in the start-search box. After
doing it see how much you've gained.

If you need more, System Restore is using 15gigs of your space.

You can probably free up over 10 gigs just by deleting all but your
most recent restore point. You can do that from withing Disk Cleanup
as well.

If your C drive goes kaput...how would you access your backup files???

The object of backing up is to place the info on a separate drive ...and
external drive...so that in the event
something goes wrong and you need to reinstall everything...your backup
being on an external drive is safe.
I an surprised the Vista Backup routine lets you back up to same drive.

There are external Drive enclosures on the market with build in HD that
connect via USB.I suggest you buy one and transfer
your backup to it.

I've been reading for days in all kinds of 'helpful' sites and still have no
answer as to why the C drive on this vista OS is shrinking as I type. I
have read everything written about this but no answer as to how to STOP it.
I am NOT at all computer savvy and I wish someone could just a simple answer
in layman's terms on how to stop this business of backups, HOW to stop the
shadow copies, RESTORE points, etc. This is not run of the mill lingo for
computer users, yet most everything I've read is geared toward a brain
surgeon's knowledge of operating it!
PLEASE, can anyone tell me a simple way to get rid of stuff that I don't
need.
I have 2 core, 3 G, C drive is down to 28.4 and probably less when I check.
I backed up info onto D drive and there is 50+ g's left in there.
I am sorry to ask such seemingly ignorant question but I'm running out of
room fast and don't know how to get rid of junk copied I don't want/ didn't
know it was doing, and get the use of C drive opened up again. It isn't
affecting D where the backup info is.
PLEASE, PLEASE,,,someone with a heart and simple answer, tell me how to save
my C drive, get rid of whatever is causing it to exhaust the space, and stop
it from doing it again!!
Thanks for some input here that a novice could understand!

Right click on My Computer, select Properties, on the next screen, under
Tasks, click on Advanced System Settings.... In the System Protection tab,
ensure that NO restore points are created for your C or D drive. NOTE,
This is NOT RECOMMENDED. System Restore has saved MANY MANY people from
having to format a drive and lose data, however you do this at your own risk
and have asked for this information.

Run Disk Cleanup.... (Start, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Tell
it you wish to clean Disk C. Ensure ALL boxes are checked. Under the More
Options tab, under System Restore and Shadow Copies, click Clean up. It
should go back to the first screen, click OK and wait for it to finish.
Depending on when you last ran Disk Cleanup, it may take some time.

After the Cleanup, reboot. Now you have stopped System Restore and no new
Restore Points will be created. I repeat, this is NOT GOOD PRACTICE. You
are fully respnsible for the costs you may incur by not having System
Restore active.
