I installed a new hard drive and was using the Maxtor utility that came
with, to mirror and replace the old HDD. It froze about half way through
when I rebooted windows stopped loading just before the profile selection
screen. I turned it off when it came up it did a scan disk of the old drive
saying that it is now drive D:.
I'm assuming that the Maxtor utility swapped hard drive letter designations
and now windows is booting from the d:\ but is looking for the profiles on
the C:\ Is there a way to go in and switch it back without getting into
windows? I used my XP install CD and got into the repair area but have no
idea where to look.
HELP Please!!!

It sounds as if you're correct in blaming the user profiles that it
expects to find on C:. Can you change boot device in BIOS setup to second
harddisk? If so, then if you in fact do so, you should be able to boot
up.

Then again you mentioned mirroring, and if it's mirrored then those user
profiles would be on C: and D: and there would be no problem booting,
unless you later had altered the original C:.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249321 may help.

Now that I've eaten and can think as straight as I can think: It sounds
as If you'd booted at some time with both drives installed and since the
GUID was duped on the clone it was reassigned as D:. If this is the only
drive you'll be using then procedure 5 in the KB article should fix it.
The article should explain everything better than I can anyway. If you
know the original GUID, you could change it back to the original, but if
not then rewriting mbr should fix it as the article explains.
