Hi!
How about "Microsoft.NET for Programmers" by Fergal Grimes, Manning (2002).
Full of essences from C# to Web service, but only 288 page!
I began .NET Programming by this great book.

I haven't found a book that quite meets both criteria, however here are my
suggestions

Advance C# and .NET
==================
Applied .NET Programming - Jeffery Richter
Essential .NET Vol 1. - Don Box

Begging to Advance
=====================
Apress - C# and .NET Framework Andrew Troelson
The Dietel and Dietel series

Also, Petzold has a new C# book out that is probably worth looking at.
