i am trying to install xp home on maxtor hdd with iwill ka266plus m/b, 256
mb ddr ram.

the set up runs ok (i have to press f7 to skip acpi according to a knowledge
base article) but the files begin to copy and then i get errors saying 'the
file'......' cannot be copied' or was not copied correctly. the cd does not
appear to be a vaild windows system image.

i get several of these messages. my windows xp cd is a genuine cd and i also
have a copy of it. when i get a copy error during set up. i swap the cd's
and the copying continues until the next error.

on the most recent install that i attempted i got a blue screen error with
the message 'windows has been stopped to prevent damage to your computer'
...... 'memory_management'

any comments or advice will be appreciated.

thank you

Hi

Which file isn't being copied? How are you trying to install XP - 'upgrade' or 'clean'? Can you, please, post the error number that came with the BSOD - that can help to isolate the problem. Did you run the Upgrade Advisor before trying to install XP:

"Windows XP Upgrade Advisor"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

or

"Check system compatibility" on the XP CD?

BTW - swapping CDs will not help your problem - and may very well make it worse.

all sorts of files are not being copied.... some of those are as follows

usrcntra.dll, modem.sys,

i am doing a clean install on a system that had windows 98 on previously. i
have replaced the hard drive with a new one. the remainder of the system is
the same. i did not write down the error message but could try to run it
again and get it.

i did not run upgrade advisor.

I've seen this same issue before on systems where the RAM was the culprit,
even though Win98 could be loaded with no issues. XP can be really flaky
about memory modules. Try swapping out the memory if you can and see if it
loads then :-)

even though my hdd is new and i am doing a clean install, does it still
count as an uprade from 98? i have upgraded bios to latest version but the
problem continues. does my m/b still remember the win98 somehow?

Hi

Have a look at the following article by MVP Michael Stevens:

"Clean Install Windows XP"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Hi

If you want to get rid of Win 98 completely and then install XP, you can:

1. Boot your PC with a Win 98/ME Emergency Boot Disk, select 'Minimal' and then from the A: prompt type

format C:

then take the floppy disk out and boot your PC with the XP CD - follow the onscreen instructions.

2. Boot your PC with a Win 98/ME Emergency Boot Disk, select 'With CD support', format as above and then put the XP CD into the CD drive navigate to the i386 folder on the CD and run winnt.exe.

3. Preferably use Michael Stevens article to clean install XP.

If Win 98 is on your hard disk ATM, then any of the above will enable you to clean install XP.

thank you very much.
