Buzzing "A" drive ??

Yesterday, I copied several files from "Documents" to a floppy disc in
my "A" drive and then removed the disc. Later, I wanted to send those
same files as email attachments so I clicked the "Browse" feature of my
email editor to open the storage library so I could navigate to
"Documents" to retrieve the files. The "A" drive, now empty. started to
buzz continuously. Apparently Windows was searching for the files in the
last place I had used to store them. I could not shut down the drive;
the cursor was ineffective. I waited for more than a minute until
Windows finally gave up and stopped trying to access the now-removed
disc.

So my questions are these:

Is there a way I can prevent XP from returning to the last-used location
to search for files in a case such as this?

Is there a way to shut down the "A" drive before it harms itself if this
should occur again?

Thanks,

Jim Murphy

Put a disc in the drive. Any disc.

At the risk or revealing my ignorance of PC operation, could you please
tell me which of my questions this is an answer to?

Do I keep a disc in the drive to prevent the buzzing when Windows
returns to the drive, or do I insert a disc into the drive while it's
buzzing as a way of silencing the drive?

Thank you. . .

To silence the drive. It will stop. You may then get a message about a
file not found on the A: drive. Cancel the message. In the meantime you
can try to identify what is causing it to seek A: and change the target.

My response was to help you silence the drive while you get on with your
work or troubleshoot why drive A: is being requested.

My thought on that is that you could try sending an attachment from My
Documents on C: in an email to yourself. This may change the default
location back to your hard drive.

Clearing the history in Start Menu properties usually works.

Jim I had the same problem with my new Dell (July 04) and thought it was a
Dell issue. Turned out it was either XP or Norton. Visit the link below and
sift through the thread and try the suggestions. I honestly cant recall
which one I tried (senior moments) but it has stopped. It was driving me
nuts with documents opened and or saved to the A drive.

To stop the drive buzzing - it is trying to access a floppy disk in Drive A:
so put a disk in the drive and it will stop making a racket.
