I am a professional soundman. When i plug my computer into my sound mixing
board, it picks up a low buzz. Now if i unplug my power cord, the buzz goes
away. I need to use my computer for music playback mixed into a sound mixing
board. Why does this happen and how can i get rid of it. I need a clear
sound to work. Please help

Sounds like a ground loop. Does your board let you lift the ground on certain
channels? If so, run the PC into one of those channels and try flipping the
ground switch. Also, make sure you're taking your output from the PC from the
right place. Some PC's have multiple output jacks with different levels on
them. You might be plugged into a 'speaker out' jack [instead of 'line out']
and overdriving the input on your board. If there's only the one output,
check the input sensitivity on your board and pad it back if need be. I'm
assuming you're using decent quality cables and adapters, etc.

If poster "tooltroll" is right, and it's a ground loop problem, this is
what solved that problem for me:

I've got my PC's audio fed into my home audio amp, and was getting an
annoying hum/buzz. That little unit fixed the problem immediately. The
other solution suggested to me at the time, which was imossible in my
case, was to have my PC and amp plugged into the same power outlet.

Regards,
Ian.

If you have cable internet service, you may also try a ground isolator on
the input to your cable modem. That is a notorious source for ground loop
problems. That's what fixed it for me. I've since lost the name of the
outfit that I got it from a few years back so I can't list it here but you
shouldn't have to much trouble finding oneee on the Web.
