Can a scanner's light source deteriorate with age and use? Is there anything
else I should consider? I'm considering buying a secondhand 120 film scanner
(preferably amateur used). Any comments on this would be welcome.

A couple of comments...

1 Yes, the light source can deteriorate or fail.
2 It's unlikely that you will find an amateur that bought a 120 film
scanner, and then decided to sell it, but good luck.

Most decent scanners will run an internal calibration routine during start
up, so hopefully this will lower the chances you are operating a scanner
that deviates too far from specification.

Except Nikons because they use LEDs as a light source.

LEDs don't deteriorate with time and are practically guaranteed to
outlast both the scanner and the user... ;o)

On the other hand, pure(er) LED light tends to show grain more which
other light sources tend to "blur".
