Buying a laptop

I want to buy a new laptop, but not to sure where best to get one. Old system is a dell inspiron, around 4-5years old now- done the job but not terribly exciting, and now struggling to play even cs on lowest set.
I'd like something that'll age well as can't afford to upgrade really, around £800, and preferably quite light. I also tend to be quite heavy on processes running.
I've looked at pcspecialist and dell, but kind of confused as to whats best for money, esp when it comes to what you can and can't skimp on.
Any help would be much appreciated!

For £800 you should get a good Laptop, but future proof, never!
Dell offering some good bargains at the moment.:thumb:
You will need at least 1GB of RAM for Vista, 2 GB would be better & 80GB+ HardDrive.
My Toshiba came with only 512MB RAM, but easily able to add more and more cheaply than Toshiba.

Can you provide any links to Laptops you have seen so we can offer more advice.:thumb:
 
Well I am in the same boat, I am looking for a new laptop to replace the rubbish one I have now! Dells tend to be very good! like the xps range. I have heard that Acer are good to. Not sure on where you cant skimp on tho. Really does depend on what you really want for your laptop.

I'm looking at the dell xps m1330. I've got a few questions about upgrades:
  • is it worth paying £80 to go from Duo T7100 (1.8, 800,2) to T7300(2, 800, 4)?
  • Is it worth paying £70 for a white LED screen?
  • Is 2GB RAM sufficient or +£285 for 4GB?? I run a lot of apps at once normally, but are the other components good enough to require 4?
Also is the 128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS card any good? They don't offer any others but i've seen a simialr acer aspire 5920:
( Intel Core2Duo T7300 processor, 15.4" Acer CrystalBrite™ TFT LCD, NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600, with 256MB VRAM, 2048MB (2*1024MB) RAM, 1GB Turbomemory, 160GB hard disk drive, 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive, Dolby® Home Theater audio enhancement, Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N, 5-in-1 card reader, 8-cell Battery, CrystalEye)
for a similar price, with a better graphics card, although it is a lot heavier.
