i want to buy a new combo of printer/driver.

is it better to choose based on if it has ready vista driver,
or any machine can work well with xp driver - and xp compatibility mode
installation?

thanks

Look for Vista ready, I know alot of people had problems getting HP printers
working with Vista early on, until proper drivers arrived. I myself have an
old Canon printer and the drivers are on the Vista CD, it would appear that
Canons seem to work okay as I don't recall a "can't install on Vista" during
the beta. I have no idea about scanners.

I like Canon printers, used them for years. Other advice stay away from
Lexmark (they also supply Dell and Compaq), mostly personal opinion but
Lexmark aren't the quickest at producing drivers.

I'm sure now that Vista is finished and soon to be retailed it'll not be too
long before Vista ready printers etc appear in shops.

i d like to choose between hp and epson because they have good service center
at my place.

is there any compatibility list anywhere?
thanks

You never want to install hardware drivers in "compatibility mode". It may
work nine times out of ten but that tenth time it's gonna bite you on the
.... ah, butt ... and you will sincerely regret your decision.

My Brother MFC 8820DN (obsolete model) works great with Vista in
Network Print or Network Scan. The Network FAX (from PC) does not
work, No Vista FAX drivers for it.
Except for having to tell (all versions) of Windows, what size paper
is in the trays, this double sides Multi Function works GREAT.
Newer models have replaced this "workgroup" grade printer.

Vista would be better. That said, if you cannot wait, my Canon MP130
works well in Vista. Newer models in the same series should as well;
some are shown in Vista's driver listing.
