buttons on web pages show only as "x"

Help, I've had windows xp for 2 weeks and now for some reason on my favorite web sites the buttons you click on to open other parts of the web page come up as "x" or nothing at all, someone said there is something in windows that is causing it to not be able to open, can someone help me find the problem
 
Empty your cache, in IE, tools, Internet Options, delete files.
