Win 98
IE 6
Everything was working fine, then when I go to a web page (for
example yahoo.com or monster.com) clicking on the buttons don't
do anything. No error message, nothing.
Also images (jpg, gif) show up as a box with a red X

Went through all the on-line steps I could find (except for
reloading windows), still no help.

I don't know of any software that was added or any other changes
that may have been made (do have kids using this computer at
times)

Any help would be appreciated.

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS, reboot.

If you find the file and you did not create it then check for parasites.

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

or:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

Thanks for the response. I think you nailed it.

I had already run Ad Aware and found four "js.notclose" trojans.
After searching for "hosts", I found the following:

hosts C:\windows 1kb sam file
lmhosts C:\windows 4kb sam file
hostsadd C:\windows\temp 1kb file
hostsadd C:\windows\system\drivers\etc 1kb file

All had modified dates around the time she started having
problems.

I'll delete the temp file and rename the others "old", one at a
time, and see if the problem goes away.

It belongs to a friend of my wife's and it has a DSL modem, so I
can't test it here (I'm still dial up).
It also had the "GW" start up error and she was unable to
install a new McAfee vs retail because she couldn't un-install
the old. I fixed those issues, but thought I might have to
reload IE/windows to fix this problem.
If this works, it will be much easier.

When I return it today, I'll also have her update her virus
scan, windows and add Pro Port and Ad-Aware and advise her to get
that kazaa junk off the system.
Thanks again for the response, I'll let you know the outcome.
