burning software

I've read many posts regarding the uselessness of Sonic applications. My
Dell 9100 Dimension with Windows XP and MCE came with Sonic applications, and
a DVD burner. I've been using MyDVD quite often yet I'm not pleased with the
LP recording quality. Because of these posts, I don't want to upgrade to
another Sonic application. And, since the computer support for Sonic is
pretty much "non-existent" according to many, MANY posts, I'd really like to
get suggestions/thoughts on other burning software (ie., Roxio, Nero) but
particularly on WinDVD Creator.

I would like to have the capability to "fit" a 2-1/2 show/video onto a 4.7Gb
DVD; I would like to transfer our home videos onto DVD; I would like to edit
out commercials (not high on my priority list); I would also like to create a
slide-show.

Any suggestions/tips is greatly appreciated.

Sonic purchased Roxio a few years ago now so that my eliminate one of the
options you have on your list, though I do find v8 and v8 Deluxe just fine.
I uninstalled the Sonic MyDVD application that came with my notebook and it
just has an additional copy of Roxio v8 on it. On my desktop, I also have
WinDVD Creator v2 and v3 and PowerDirector v5. They all do what I want very
nicely.

I had Nero on my x64 PC but uninstalled (with great difficulty)... a long
time ago it was great, now it's just bloatware and getting bigger every
version. I wouldn't mind if it gave me the opportunity to chose what I want
installed, but no such luck. Roxio does give me Napster but it doesn't
complain too much (except for asking for a reboot) when I uninstall it.

Thank you, Cari. I was hoping that you'd respond to my inquiry as I've read
many of your suggestions/thoughts in this newsgroup. So let me get this
straight: you have Roxio v8 and WinDVD Creator v2 and v3 and PowerDirector
v5. With what I'm trying to accomplish, would I need to upgrade my Sonic
application (it suggests
MyDVD8 Essential, Premiere, or Suite(?)) and WinDVD Creator? Like I said,
I'm very leary of upgrading a Sonic application. Would WinDVD Creator give
me the results I previously asked for?

Thanx, again, Cari.
