Burning security updates to disk

I'm reinstalling Windows for a friend. His internet
provider has a VERY infected network and I know from
experience that even the time it takes to download Windows
updates is long enough to get infected from the network,
so I'd like to apply the updates before bringing his
system online. How do I find, download and copy to disk
the updates? On my own system I go to windowsupdate and
the site automatically installs the updates, I can't find
any downloaded files that I could burn to a disk and take
to my friend. Any suggestions?

That is a good idea OR download and install a personal firewall on his
computer which he will need anyway, unless he has a properly configured nat
router at the cable/dsl modem, before he plugs inot the network at which
time he should be able to safely access Windows Update. Zone Alarm is
adequate and good for novice users. Anyhow see the link below to answer your
question about how to use Windows Update Catalog and see the link about
further securing his computer. Be sure to install his service pack first -
at least Service Pack3 and review the last link about how to secure your
Internet Explorer settings. Also his ISP is not infected, that is the nature
of the internet. --- Steve
