burning data vs. music

I burned 10 WAV files to a cd-r using Roxio dataCD project, which did
not play on the cd player. They totalled 648mb.
However, burning the same files using musicCD project, I had over 100mb
left,
and about 6min, and it played in the cd player.
How did that happen if the number and total file size didnt change?

Also, is there a difference between music and data CD-Rs?

I guess it's possible the WAV files were higher resolution than the
audio cd standard. If that's the case the files would have been
downsampled, ie made smaller, when burnt to the audio cd.

No.

A data CD has more redundancy for error correction than does a music CD. This is because a music CD will attempt to interpolate missing bits so that you will not notice the read errors. A data CD requires more redundancy because all read errors must be corrected to preserve data integrity. Thus a WAV file with its added redundancy will take more space that its equivalent CDA format.

Besides the difference in redundancy and error correction, the audio CD (CDA) format is not a file that is recognized by windows, and windows format files e.g. WAV are not recognized by a music CD player. The problem with CDA not being a valid file format is the reason you must extract it to WAV format to do any editing.
