I have a new version of windows. Is there a utility that will allow me to
make simple copies to a DVD-R? (I'm not referring to the Windows Media
process). Thanks. -- David

Windows XP already has IMAPI burning software included so you could copy
*files* over there. However, many folks don't like IMAPI and want CD
burning software that supports the various formats (music, video,
CD-text, whatever). You didn't get any CD burning software included
with the DVD-R drive, or with the computer if you paid someone else to
do the prebuild for you?

Hi, I have nero on my system.. but prefer this one.. I never get errors
with it, as I do with nero.. but of course this is a personal choice..
http://www.deepburner.com/ Deep Burner is free, consistant, and simple to
use.. Rainy

Thanks, I'll give it a try. What's weird is that in my old version of XP (in
my trashed computer), there was a utility in the OS that let you do datafile
burns. XP seems to be the only OS that marches backwards. I'm sure it will be
a new day with Vista.*

*Yeah, right.

Vanguard --- I transferred my Iomega DVD burning drive from my old computer;
it may have burning software somewhere, so I'll check it out. Where is the
IMAPI utility found? Thanks for your help. -- David

DVD burning (+/-R) is not natively supported by Windows XP or any prior OSes
from Microsoft. If you had support in your prior OS - it was a third-party
plugin - whether you knew that or not.

Many applications (Roxio/Ahead/etc) install their products in such a way
that it looks like you can just drag/drop to the CD/DVD just like you could
a floppy or zip disk. This is *not*, nor has it been - a native function of
the Windows operating system.

The IMAPI service should already be running (it is set to Automatic
startup by default). You don't need to start anything. Check the
Services applet to make sure IMAPI is started. Just insert the blank CD
and copy files to it.

Oops, nevermind. I see you were asking about DVD-R. IMAPI doesn't
support DVD-R. It supports CD-R. Guess you'll have to hunt around for
that CD burning software that you didn't bring over with the DVD drive
from your old computer.
