Burning CD's

I attempt to burn a cd using the cd burning wizard. When I click "write
these files to cd" I get a window that comes up and says: Insert a writable
disc to continue
There is no disc in the drive
Please insert a writable cd into drive d:\.

I already have a writable cd in the drive before I click on the button to
copy. Does the cd need to be formated before I can write to it? If so, how
do I format the cd?
 
Could be a bad CD-R. does this happen to more than 3 CDs??

Are they generics or name brand CD-Rs? Name bradns tend to be better quality

Dont use XP's built-in
burning. It's hopeless.

And doesnt support packet-wriring.

Install something like CD Creator/DirectCD

Heaps better.

No. And that's not an option with the built-in burner. See
http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm for a rundown on its capabilities. Other
CD software is more sophisticated, but only you can decide whether it's
worth the expense.

Before clicking "write these files", clear that screen. Then, in Windows
Explorer, drag the file to be written to the CD drive letter. When
loading has finished, and the "write these files" screen reappears, click
on that choice once again - and see if it now accepts the CD as writable.

Of course, if the CD has been closed (after a prior session) it will not
be writable. AUDIO CDs are automatically closed, so when making them be
sure to have all files ready for burning in THAT session. DATA CDs can be
appended, but it's not necessarily efficient and economical.
