I want to copy some tracks onto a CD. Windows XP will only let me use
Windows Media Player. I can 'rip' the files OK but when I try to copy them
the program stops. If I copy them using drag & drop I get no sound.
Someone told me to format the disc first and make it compatible afterwards,
but I cannot find any options to do that. I am sure i am missing something
simple!

Compact Disks have no ability to format.
You should decide which disk you wish to see (data or music) before you
begin burning process.

You should use Windows Media Player or any other (Nero Burning ROM ?)
software to write music files into CD.
I recommend you to train with CD-RW before, because you can cleanup it.

Thanks Alex. I'd never heard of formatting CDs either. I used Windows
Media Player, but after making a burn list the program inspected the first
file and then just stopped each time.

You can format a CD-RW using Nero or Roxio, it is called packet writing.
But, do not use RWs for music, use CD-Rs. They are one time use and
cannot be changed, erased nor files be deleted. A formatted CD-RW can
be erased, changed and/or added to or deleted from like your harddrive.
