burning a dvd

A fair question, but a fairly open-ended one with MANY MANY answers.
Personally, I have had good luck with Ritek, Verbatim, Phillips and HP. I
have an HP burner with Lightscribe technology so those are the type of discs
I am buying now (manufactured by Verbatim). They are a bit more costly, but
the ability of my burner to burn labels directly on the media is to me a big
plus. No inks to buy, no messy labels to work with...I have had ZERO bad
cd's or DVDs out of the last 35-40 projects burnt from these discs.

If you are asking about which format to burn with...dvd-r, dvd+r, etc. First
look at what your DVD burner supports....you're not going to have any luck
burning a format that your burner doesn't recognize.

If you're asking about compatibility with the set-top dvd players of the
world; you might want to test the DVD player with a few burnt dvds of
different formats to see what it specifically supports. I have had GREAT
success with DVD+R discs in all types of dvd players. Conversely, some dvd
players were unable to play a dvd-r that I burnt, and on a GE dvd player the
DVD-R discs took 3-4 minutes to start playing but eventually they did play.

Sorry if I've given a vague answer, if you can narrow your question down to
be more specific about what you want, a more specific answer will surely
come. The regulars here are TRUE gurus and so...if you ask it, they will
answer!
