I volunteer at an organization. This organization
purchased a compaq computer with a read writable cd
driver. The computer came with XP but it wouldn't network
with the other computers so Office 2000 was installed
instead. Office 2000 doesn't seem to have any CD burning
software built in (Record now) and I'm wondering if I can
somehow add CD burning software to this computer so that
we can make use of the hardware it came with.

Thanks for your help.

Your description is a little off-base...let me take a guess at what's going
on here. You bought a computer that had Windows XP preinstalled, and had to
scrap XP because it wouldn't network with your other computers? (I'm
assuming this is because the computer came with XP Home Edition, and you
have a domain?) So you installed Windows 2000? (Not Office 2000. Because
neither Office 2000 nor Office XP comes with any sort of CD burning
capability.) Assuming this is the situation, then the answer to your
question is "yes". You can install CD Burning software on that computer. You
can get a copy of Roxio Easy CD Creator or Nero, another good one. Also, if
you are on a limited budget, Windows XP comes with native CD burning,
included in Windows Media Player. However, this only records music CDs, not
data CDs.

One correction :

you can burn data cd's in WinXP too, by just dragging & dropping the files
onto the recorder (listed in Explorer or 'My Computer').
And yes, there -is-, and it is even adviseable to use external CD-writing
programs - these have far more functions, options and built-in protections
than the native WindowsXP writing tool.
Roxio, Nero burning, Easy cd creator, WinOnCD, .... are some of them, and
most of these have free trial versions too.
(also, when you buy a CD-R drive, mostly this kind of software comes bundled
with it - often even when it's a pre-assembled pc. So I advise you to check
your software first, if not present check with the seller of your PC.

Oh, just in case : find the respective sites of the burning software in
google or another search engine.

Ah yes, how I forget. I've never used Windows XP's native data CD recording,
maybe that's why I forgot about the. The only "Microsoft" CD recording tool
I've used is WMP (which I use as little as possible!). Thanks for keeping a
head's up and keeping me in line. ;)

A small (?) warning: If you decide to try out different programs, be sure you
remove _all_ traces of the previously installed program before you install
another one. The programs will often conflict with each other, and
"uninstall" doesn't do what it should do. Go to support.microsoft.com for
further information (It's a site you should bookmark in any case.) Search on
the program name(s).
