I am trying to find an anti-virus program that I can create a bootable
CD to use to check computers.
I would like to use Norton 2004 but I can't get that to work.
There is a AV from avast called Bart that I could use but the price is
not in my range.

Any suggestions?

thanks

I made a bootable Windows PE cd with PE-Builder from this site.

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

I added McAfee antivirus, Stinger and Ad-Aware and lots of other useful
pre-installation programs.
Even have Explorer and Mozilla Embeded.
Full network support and ADSL compability.

Works great!

Good luck!

The problem with creating a AV scanner on CDROM is its Read-Only nature. Viruses
definitions change rapidly and it becomes a PITA situation to keep burning new CDROMs..

I find a parallel port ZIP drive better. This way I can use a ZIP250 and be able to modify
the ZIP disk at will.

I use one boot floppy and use IOMEGA software to create a drive letter for the ZIP disk.

Since just about every computer has a parallel port, this beats using CD media. Also the
lof file of the scan can be written to rthe ZIP disk. Even if you use a CDRW disk, you
still have to go throught the CD burn process and you can't write log files using CD media.

In addition:
If you post to UseNet with your TRUE, not a munged, email address then you have invited the
Swen Internet worm [aka; W32/Gibe-F] to visit you.

The Swen is news spelled backwards. The reason it is called this is because the Swen worm
harvests email addresses from UseNet News Groups. It has an engine that allows it to post
itself to UseNet News Groups as well as it has its own email engine. From the list of
email addresses that it has harvested, it will then email itself to those addresses.

It is certainly possible with Nero to update bootable cds and have them
remain bootable, though Nero version as well as media quality/type may
affect this.

There is a live-update plugin for the PE-Builder cd, it updates the virus
DAT files and put it in the RAM-disk.

It is *much* more difficult to do this with CD media that Random-Read/Random-Write media
such as a ZIP disk.

Maybe for you it is unnecessary -- I need to log every hit. So do most other network

Then you missed something, the cd-r is always write protected so no virus or
hazardous code can jump over to it. Give PE-Builder a try you'll like it.
:-)

If you boot from a clean disk, then NO virus is running from RAM and therefore nothing can
get infected in the first place. Viruses don't/can't do the following; "...can jump over
to it..." without actively running in RAM.

If simply replacing files is enough, it's not at all difficult. That is,
unless requiring NTFS access - which the OP probably is. DOS scanners are no
problem though.

Shane

The two can't be compared. You just simply copy the updated files to the
Random-Read/Random-Write media. To do this with a CD, you have to replace the files in a CD
image and go through the CDROM burning process. If it is a CDR and the disk was closed, you
need a new disk.

As I said, it is version specific - and may be media-quality dependent. But
you *can* burn a bootable cd with at least some recent versions of Nero,
using floppy emulation (rather than one big iso) and add further files
(obviously not having closed the session) as though burning a standard
multi-session cdr. Not that I've seen the process documented anywhere - all
I've seen are warnings against trying. But I have done it several times
(while experimenting with bootable cds for 9x).

Actually I'm burning one right now. My father has - apparently, at least -
a Netsky (probably W32.Netsky.d@mm) and I'm going to his place tomorrow to
sort things out, and I'm burning a cd for the job. I've decided to have it
boot straight into the scanning proceedure - full scan with one tool in RAM,
infected files renamed and moved, report saved to C, delete tool from RAM,
full scan with next tool etc. So in days to come I'll be experimenting with
updating it (DOS scanners only, though I may set Stinger/Sysclean/CWShredder
etc to autorun in Windows).

I get about 50 virus a day already along with 300 spam messages a day.
No big deal.

Nero 5.5.10.24 will burn new sessions to a floppy emulated cdr and the disc
remain bootable. However, hyphens are converted to underscores (and iirc so
are $ characters). I don't know if there's a setting that gets round this.

afaics the solution is to zip the AV before burning (I know this works) and
unzip it rather than copy it to RAM. Means updating the whole program rather
than just the defs - but with DOS scanners the defs are the bulk anyway.

Still no good for NTFS though.

I and several others I know would be *VERY* interested in a way to scan NTFS.

I have tried NTFSDOS in conjunction with McAfee Command Line Scanner but the two memory
managers are incompatible.

I and several others I know would be *VERY* interested in a way to scan NTFS.

I have tried NTFSDOS in conjunction with McAfee Command Line Scanner but the two memory
managers are incompatible.

|
|
| Still no good for NTFS though.

go for PE-Builder if you want to scan NTFS and Linux ext2 - ext3
filesystems.......

You complain about my Top Post but you couldn't snip the unimportant parts ?

Yes, I was experimenting with it last year, then began having problems
building the iso. After binning about 30 cdrs I took a break from it and
haven't been back yet. I have got the latest version. I know it doesn't use
2xExplorer anymore. I would think NT4's Winfile would be a good substitute.

I'd established to my own satisfaction that it enables file scans with
Ad-aware and VirusScan, among others. The question at the time was whether
it scans the XP registry rather than the PE registry. Presumably it does, or
does now?

I didn't realise it scanned Linux too. That's useful.

Dave :-)

Let's see a few stats on your last post in this thread.

202 lines (according to Agent). Your bit of this included (a manual
count of) 9 newlines of which 4 actually said something and one of
those said "Dave"

Your post prior to that was 116 lines of which a mere 4 were yours,
none of which explained your, no doubt, vast knowledge of universal
filesystems and cdrw packets driver programs.
