I burned the Windows sp2 disc for a friend using Sonic Record Now.
Will this disc work or should she order a disk from M.S.

All that SP2 is (from download, essentially) is a compressed file containing
everything needed to install SP2 onto a Windows Xp computer. If that is
what you buirned to CD/DVD - give it to your friend, have them copy the file
off to their hard disk drive in some directory and run it from there.

I'm curious, Sheenan, will the burned cd give the same prompts and directions
as the Windows original cd? I ask b/c you referred to saving it to a folder
on the hard drive then running it form there, as though it was a bit
different.
Thank you

yes it will work , I do it all the time
SP2 or the Windows XP with SP2
Microsoft does not care about the CD, they care about a legit product key.

.... "Shenan" ...

You are being unclear as to what you have burned to CD.

If you burned a "Windows XP with SP2 integrated installation CD" - that will
_not_ install *just* the service pack 2 onto a system. It can be used to
possibly upgrade, definitely clean install a system - but that is not what
you inferred was desired.

If you burned the downloadable SP2 installation file from Microsoft and
burned it to CD - there are no 'prompts' - you simply run the executable and
it starts the installation. Yes - it may ask you questions, etc - but it is
not going to autostart or any of that. I recommended copying to the local
hard disk drive to make sure there is no problem unpacking the files from
the executable and/or any trouble reading from the CD after the installtion
starts. You will have better luck just running straight from the computer's
supposedly working hard disk drive. Why take the chance on a failed install
because your CD was scratched or her CDROM drive is slightly off-balance?

If you ordered the SP2 CD and are now making a copy for your friend - that
is different. In fact - I recommend your friend just get themselves a copy
of the SP2 installation CD from Microsoft. Or she can download the install
file herself...

It is difficult for a newbie to clearly articulate to a pro exactly what is
intended.
I think it is safe to say that my friend can use the cd-r that I burned from
my original Windows disc. I am typing the name of the disc as I view it,
"Microsoft Windows xp service pack 2 with advanced security technologies." It
does not include the Windows xp o.s., just the sp2 disc b/c as do not want to
get into slipstreaming.
We thought we could save a bit if she could use mine now instead of waiting
a month. However, we would not sacrifice security for a small amont of $$.
Unless I hear otherwise she will run the disc I burned.
Thank you for all your support.

db - Could you please tell me if we need to install the cd I burned from the
original sp2(not O.S.) in SAFE MODE? WE are newbies and the least complicated
the better even if it is only tapping f 8.
Thank you

installing sp2 on some
computers is sometimes
impossible via normal
mode, especially this late
in the life of the winxp -
its replacement vista has
been out for a while now.

however installing sp2 via
safe mode is usually successful
because windows is for all
practical purposes pure
windows. in normal mode
there are a lot of unknown
variables resulting from third
party software, custom
configurations, services enabled
that probably don't have to be,
etc...

my suggestion is to transfer the
sp2 file from the cd-r you made onto
the harddrive of the computer you
are working on, instead of running
it from the cd-r.

another option is that you
can also load your windows cd and
copy that sp2 file via "my computer" and
onto the harddrive of that computer as
well, that is if the cd-r isn't working.

then from that computers harddrive launch
the installation. you can try launching
it via normal mode. but if sp2 doesn't
install, then an alternative is to try it
via safemode.

if neither safemode or normal
mode will accept the sp2 update,
then let us know.
