I had a TDK burner and it suddley seemed dead. When anything was in it the
computer did not show that there was a disc in the drive, this inclueded all
software that works fine on my CD/DVD drive. So i replace it with a philips
drive and it worked flawlessly 2 time then stopped. Then it suddenly worked
agian. Now it is still giving me the same problem. It does not see anything
in the drive at all. I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Please help

Check your power supply, your power cable to the CD drive inside the
computer and the data cable, too. If all check out OK then try both drives
on either the other IDE port, a raid card or another computer. If both check
out OK there, I would be wondering about the motherboard and if it is dying
etc.
