Bullet indents and formatting taking over paragraph

I do a lot of writing in power point, and move from a non-indented paragraph
format to a bulleted list often. If I move the caret in the first level
indent in the bullet, the left indent will move in the paragraph. The only
way I have found around this is to use the second level indent for bullets,
which I don't wish to do . Sometimes this happens, and sometimes it does not,
and I have not determined what it is that causes it to happen. Any ideas?

The movement may happen when there is more than one line to the text, and
not happen (or at least not be obvious) when there's only one line.

I think the 2nd level bullets is the easiest way to do what you're asking.
Otherwise, you'll need to use separate textboxes and align them, and that
can be even more of a pain.
 
Oh, forgot to mention that the 2nd level bullets don't have to look like 2nd
level bullets. Just go to the slide master and make the bullet and font size
for the 2nd level match that of the 1st level. Then remove the 1st level
bullet and hold down the Ctrl key while you drag the indent markers on the
toolbar to align them the way you want for both levels.

This way the audience doesn't have to know the 2nd level bullets are not 1st
level bullets, you know?
 
I think I actually found the answer, after I posted the question - the first
level indent and margins control the paragraph, whether it's a bullet or not.
That would seem to explain it, though I haven't figured out why it happens
sometimes, and sometimes not. Thanks.
