I decided this summer to build my own computer with my spare time. Having nothing but some magazines and the internet i managed to make a running computer and install Xp on it. Wiindows worked fine and all the applications would run, but the internet wouldnt work. So I followed the instructions for my motherboard i installed the drivers for it right after i installed XP, figureing that might fix my internet problem. I restarted my computer and when it came back on, windows booted up fine but when i tried to click on internet explorer nothing would start, an hourglass would appear then go away and nothing would happen. I tried to then system restore but the same thing would happen. Just five minutes ago i turned on my computer and i couldn't even press the "Start" button.

Tough to say what your problem is without knowing more. Sounds like you may
have had a NIC install or NIC driver problem. Or it could have been a IE
configuration error (eg looking for a nonexistent proxy or maybe a gateway
address was entered incorrectly) At this point you might consider
re-installing XP from your CD. Restore your BIOS to defaults.

Im no expert on building PC's but you could try
installing a free browser to try just to see if you can
connect to the internet. I use Enigma Browser as an
example.

When you installed XP where you able to Activate? Go into the Device Manager
(Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab) and ensure that your Network Card or
Modem is correctly installed. Then run the Internet Connection Wizard from
Control Panel->Internet Tools->Connection Tab.

No I would try to get the onboard network adaptor working. Is it listed in
Device Manager? If not try reinstalling the drivers for it off your
motherboard driver CD.
