hello,

i'm looking to build a pc in the new year and need advice as i'm not
up to date with whats new!

software: sound forge v7 / ableton live v3 / reason / acid pro v4
plus the usual windows/office stuff.

not bothered about gaming

hardware : at least 120gb hard drive / cd/dvd rw / flat screen monitor
studio quality soundcard something like m-audio??? - don't mind
spending on this

it has to be stable so doesn't have to be whats come out this week, it
just must be able to cope with the demands of processing large audio
files.

any help appreciated and max spend (not including monitor £1000)

thanks

You may not be able to beat a ready made system.Check,"Medion"
systems.
You can get them at Toys-R-Us" and,"Aldi" Supermarkets and even PC
world if you ask for them. The specs are awesome as is the build
quality.
They have consistently had superb reviews and I don't think I could
put together a system at their price for what you get.I've worked on
several updating them and they are a breeze and the BQ is fantastic
and their after sales has been great.

however if you do want to self build I've used this company for
several years and never had one bad piece of kit,
http://www.cclcomputers.biz/
and you can use their configurator to help price up,

HTH :)

toys'r'us isn't the first place i'd go shopping for a quiet, reliable,
highpower audio workstation.
first off, you can do it for way less than your grand.
if you're dealing with huge files i'd consider a P4 HT chip as it's nearly
the same as a dual processor setup. i nearly always build athlon based
systems though and a 2500 barton core would do the job nearly as well for a
lot less.

get at least 512MB ram, and buy it from www.crucial.com/uk.
onboard sound is very good these days ("studio quality" being a bit of a
vague term) but you might want to look into multiple input cards or ones
like the SB live drives that give you nice jack in points on the front panel
as well as the rear for convenience and to stop you knackerign your rear
connectors.

what you probably want more than anything else is a fairly quiet system: get
a decent 350W PSU or above and get one rated to be quiet. don't use the
retail fan on your CPU but get an aftermarket one with an 80mm fan rather
than a 60 as they run quieter. similarly, for case cooling one 120mm fan is
quieter than 2 80mm ones.
get a decent quiet case to put the whole lot in (i use an antec sonata).

for HDDs, you can't really beat WD 7200rpm "caviar" models - you *could* go
for SATA but it's not really necessary.

onboard video should be fine for what you want to do as well.

if you want to mail me specifically i'll talk you through some of the audio
workstations i've built in the past...
