Someone could purchase a Dell PC for $299 which includes Windows XP.
A much better value than your proposed rig.

| Ok, gang, I have come up with a web-surfin' granny type PC I want to sell.
| With taxes and shipping in my area, it comes to $267. And that is no OS,
| keyboard, speakers or mouse. Obviously adding XP would add another $100. I
| was thinking about adding a free Linux based OS.
|
| Please critique my plan. If you can see where I can save money, please let
| me know. Thanks.

But you don't provide a working system. As far as granny is concerned
(or anyone else for that matter), it's NOT a PC, it's a oversize door
stop or maybe a unpadded footstool.
So while they have to mail in a rebate, they actually get a working PC!
You have no rebate AND no PC.

My guarantee is to provide a reliable system. At least Dell can't guarantee
that or guarantee they will get excellent customer service.

Another plus to my system compared to Dell is that my system has a solid
upgrade path unlike Dell's systems.

Last time, YOU DO NOT PROVIDE A WORKING SYSTEM.

Bob,

I take it you have a Dell system. If you do, I feel sorry for you. Why don't
you sell your rig and swallow your pride and ask me to build your next rig?

Sorry, I build my own. BUT if I was in the market for a bargain basement
price COMPLETE system, WITH a warrantee, AND documentation, AND 24 hr
tech support, Dell would get the nod, as you don't have any thing to
compete with. What part of COMPLETE SYSTEM do you fail to comprehend?

Whoever said anything about a "COMPLETE SYSTEM?" If you notice from my first
post, I clearly mentioned it was just the computer itself. Keyboard,
speakers, mouse & monitor were not in the picture.

I think you failed to comprehend in what you were reading.

Ryan I know where your coming from. I work for a OEM distributer and its near
imposible to compete price wise with Dell and the other big companies. Even
so we do very well because we also provide very good customer service.

I would recomend you put a OS on your pc for sure. It would be nice if you
could put XP on them but that would add up to another 50% to the price.

As long as your willing to support Lynix I dont see any reason to not use
it. Especialy if they will just use it to surf the web and get mail.

Hey Woodpile,

Do you have a link to your company? I wouldn't mind checking out your
inventory.

Actually, if you look directly at a parts/parts list, with exact specs,
you do better purchasing from a OEM that doesn't mark-up a lot.

As an example, the Dimension 2400 unit that was $400 After Rebates, was
$549 to purchase, you can get a faster motherboard, new chipset (instead
of the old (4 year) Cel/P4 chipset that you can't even buy a CPU upgrade
for, AGP Video card, and a faster then 5400 RPM drive with 256MB of ram.
So, the only real hitch is the Monitor - and you can purchase cheap 17"
screens for under $90 most places (same quality as the crap they were
including with the Dell 2400)..... It's about the same, maybe $50 more,
but you make up for that $50 by being able to actually upgrade the
computer where the Dimension 2400 was a total piece of crap and not
upgradeable.

Leythos,

When you say do better by purchasing from an OEM that doesn't mark up a lot,
do you mean someone else than Newegg? If so, which OEM's are you talking
about?

You state. And I quote:

"Ok, gang, I have come up with a web-surfin' granny type PC I want to sell."

Then you describe something that is obviously not anything remotely
suitable for a "web surfing granny" to use. Please review your OWN
contradictions in market vs. product. Your plan has been critiqued and
is doomed to failure beginning with the third sentence. Either change
the intended market, or adjust the product.

Hey Ryan,

We do have a web site but its not accessable without an account. We
dont sell to end users, only resellers. You would have to have a buisness tax
ID number and other things in order to open an account.

Im not sure if it would be proper to put the company name up here. Especily
since I post during my freetime at work. HeHe.
