Would ti be worth my while to build a home server to speed up my 3 computers
or maybe would it be adventageous to have a server and if so what
documentation could I refer to to help in the construction and deployment of
a home server. Thanks folks tsmit3

there are file servers, internet servers, printer servers, media servers and
others

what kind do you mean? If you mean to make it into a router.. there is no
difference in speed.

Going by your subject line - it would be a waste to build a server to use as
a "router" - when you could get one that would have everything a normal home
user would need for under $100 - and include wireless access, etc.

Reading more into your body (of the message) - you need to specify what type
of server you intend to make. I think by defining what this server will be
used for - you may answer your own question.

Since your asking the question my suggested answer would be No. You would be
better off with a router an a much simpler p&p network.
For most homes and also some small office your better of with a simple
router and Peer to peer.

You don't say what kind of server or what you want to use it for, but you
mention a router in the subject line. There's no advantage and no speedup in
trying to do this.

In general, servers don't speed up anything--in many cases they do the
opposite, since accessing a file, for example, on a server is slower than
accessing it locally. Servers are tools for sharing resources in a
structured secure way.

I appologize for the lack of thought I put in to my question before posting
..I don't know what I was thinking if at all. I suppose that the thing I left
out was that the server would be for internet surfing .I know that when two
of us are online most of the time things slow down quite a bit so my question
should have been if the info is sort of preprocessed before reaching our
desktops would this in effect speed up our info or would just be a wasted
step.I guess its just as it was suggested I just answer my own question the
server in effect would be like a middle man.
Thanks for all of the support ,lots of learning to do here!
