build your own laptop

Is it reasonable to think I could build my own laptop from eBay
components? Are the components fairly standardized?

For instance, will a Toshiba screen work with a Dell laptop
motherboard?

Thanks.

In theory. You could buy 2 or 3 parts boxes of the same model, with
different defects, and make 1 good machine out of them.

Other than hard drives and RAM, not even a little bit. Even then there
are issues.

No.

Possible, yes.
Reasonable, no.
Cost-effective, probably not for anything decent.
Plus, the boards these days are highly integrated to the
case. At most you'd buy the entire laptop and just
mix-n-match video, memory, drives.

Don't count on it.

The best way to build your own laptop is to buy a whole
brand new laptop, take it apart, then build it using those
parts. At least then you:

Get good bundled price

Know all the parts used to work together

Know that if you rebuild it right and didn't damage
anything, the parts will again work together when you're
done.

Lol, so true. A look at any laptop will show how tighly and
customisedly things are packed together, so your chance of a mix and
match going together are pretty small.
