Thanx!!

Well - I'm glad you were successful in the cleanup and reinstallation,
because I don't have a solid prescription for that situation, and have
largely abdicated posts in the installation group because I don't feel I have
a solid answer to any of the "numbered error" situations.

I hear you when you say that you experienced this with the new version, and
didn't with the previous one, but all the info that I have leads me to
believe that the update changed the expiration date, and not functionality.

Issues with multiple users, particularly with limited rights users, versus
administrators are par for the course with the beta1 product--and aren't
going to be fixed in the beta1 code.

This has been an unusual process, as beta's go. Beta1 was introduced in
early January of 2005 only a few weeks after Microsoft acquired the software
vendor that developed it. Since then, it has had a few new builds issued,
but the effort has been reserved for developing beta2, which will be written
to Microsoft standards from the start. The multiple user issues should be
taken care of--beta2 includes a component running as a system service, and
updates via the autoupdate mechanism, among other changes.

However, we don't know when beta2 will be available to public beta
testers--some time in the first half of this year was Mike Nash's statement
some months ago, and more recently another Microsoft spokesperson has said
first quarter.

Further info and correction:

Now that I have re-installed; the "unexpected error, quitting" message still
appears at login for secondary users. It's mainly an annoyance.

What other products are out there that appear to be as thorough as MS
AntiSpyware?

I've taken it as my "job" (a purely voluntary one!) to mind this forum and
try to support the beta process. As such, I'm not the expert on other
products.

Sunbelts Counterspy product is another which is an outgrowth of Giant's
technology--Sunbelt licensed its use before Microsoft bought the company.
Microsoft is obligated to supply definitions to Sunbelt through July of 2007,
as I recall.

For removal, many folks here like Ewido. I don't know how its real-time
protection compares.

I don't believe there's anything in the "no cost" category that compares to
Microsoft Antispyware. Additionally, in comparative reviews, Microsoft
Antispyware, beta or not has come out among the top finishers.

I hope others will chime in with their favorite other products.

One other note. The final technology to grow out of this beta in addition
to being available for free in Vista, Windows XP, and I believe, Windows
2000--will be a part of two subscription products from Microsoft--Windows
OneCare Live:

(a product aimed at individuals and very small businesses)
and Microsoft Client Protection

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/solutions/security/clientprotection/default.mspx

which is aimed at large managed networks.
