Terry B.

HELLO THERE! I've been wrestling with this for hours--and judging from
the tons of posts to ng's, lots of other XP users have gone thru the
same thing: When diving down into a directory, I've got new windows
opening up 'til my task bar is clogged with them.
What I've done:
1.) Gone into Tools>Folder Options>General, and selected 'Open
each window in its own window (done this many times!) THEN hit Apply,
then OK.
This doesn't help :-{
2.) Downloaded and installed Kelly's Korner .reg tweaks from
lines 209 and 215. Didn't help...
3.) Went to Tools>Folder Options>General and selected 'Restore to
default settings' then Apply, OK...didn't help.
4.) Went to Accessories>System Tools>System Restore and tried to
restore to an earlier point where I know this wasn't happening. No joy
(the error msge came back that Windows couldn't restore to that point)
5.) Finally, I've run 'regsvr32 /i shell32' a couple of times,
with no other windows open. Didn't make any difference.

Has anybody got any ideas other than what I've already tried?
This bug is very irritating, and at this point I'm just about out of
ideas.
Thanks much for your time & attention to detail ;-]

Terry.

Here is what you did: 1.) Gone into Tools>Folder
Options>General, and selected 'Open
each window in its own window (done this many times!)
THEN hit Apply,
then OK.

Try selecting "open each folder in the same window". Do
this from the folder called My Computer.

Hope this helps.

ok you lost me here what is it you want to change all the
steps you mention do exacty what its doing

if you want less taskbar icons you need to enable taskbar
grouping

if you want only one window you need to set folder
options "open each window in the same window

Well that's not TOO surprising is it? I mean, you just TOLD windows to open
each folder in it's own window! What do you think it's going to do then? :)

Hmmm.... Let's think about that one for a second.

OK, OK--You got me! But WHAT I ACTUALLY DID, and WHAT I MEANT TO SAY,
was that I did select 'Open each window in the same window.' I must be
getting so nuts with the problem that I expressed it bassackwards.
Sorry about the mis-statement!
NOW can anyone help with the situation?

Thanks Again.
Terry.

Terry,

In any explorer window, click on tools >> folder options and on the general
tab, select "Open each folder in the same window".

You can try typing in Start Run
regsvr32 /i shell32

The file associations need DDE to open a document in a currently running application (eg a folder in Explorer). The above thing partially fixes DDE associations so may or may not work.

Have you been playing with file associations. If so which ones.

TO DAVID CANDY, MVPS:
Thanks for taking the time ;-] Yes I DID try 'regsvr32 /i shell32'
(w/out single quotes), but it didn't make any difference. The only
FILE ASSOCIATIONS that I can think of that were tampered w/ just prior
to this problem: I had been trying to tweak my 'My Documents' desktop
shortcut icon to have that folder open in 'folder tree view' in the
Explorer pane, and I had changed the Target on the icon's Properties
from the standard to one that involved '%windir%\EXPLORER.EXE
/e,c:'...and later on, I changed the Target Properties to what they
are now: 'C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e, C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\My Documents'. Also, I think I went into Tools>Folder
Options>File Types, to the plain '[NONE] File Folder' setting and
clicked on Advanced & entered 'Explore' (instead of Open) and set that
as default.
That's all I can think of that was changed just before I started
having the problem....any further ideas?
Terry.

You'll need to open the registry again, and navigate to
HKey_Root\Clsid\directory and set the value to none or explore.

You need to remove the Explore you added. File Folder inheirits from Folder. You are overriding the default command. And you didn't enter the DDE info.
