Having problems ridding my machine of a name changer.
sysmon.startup.namechanger. Defender always finds a new one at computer
restart. The names are typically of the following format: ????enc.exe. In the
scan options the custom scan seems to be nonfunctional. When selecting only
one folder, or any for that matter, your prefs are ignored and a complete
scan ensues. Defender has been causing my sytem, (XP Pro SP2) to freeze. I
think this may be a result of the real time protection.

I suspect that the freezes are more likely a result of spyware than of
Defender, unless you are running a full scan at those times.

Have you tried running a quickscan and removal in safe mode?

The custom scan begins with a rather extensive scan--I'm not sure whether it
is identical to a quickscan or some large subset of it--but it will
eventually proceed to scan the desired object.

I've ran a scan and removal in safe mode as well. I've been using Defender
for about 3 days now. Everyday it's frozen. Didn't start until I installed
Defender.
This morning I disabled the Real-time protection and its the 1st time it ran
a complete day without locking up. As far as spyware goes, besides Defender
I'm using Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware. All with the latest updates.
There appears to be no Spyware. Defender wouldn't rid me of the namechanger
but Adaware did. So all's well now. Just won't be using The real-time
protection again. It very well could be a conflict only associated with my
machine.

That's a nasty conflict, though. Are there other apps doing real-time
scanning on your system? What antivirus do you use?
