I am having a problem with my new computer. I recently
purchased a new HP computer at Best Buy & even purchased
the extended warranty on it. This was the middle of June
& now I learn that there is a known bug that shuts your
computer down & then reboots. It happens over and over &
they state it is a Windows XP problem that someone left a
portal open & then someone accessed it & it is happening
on all systems. They told me I would have to pay $40 to
have it fixed, and that it is not covered under my
warranty since it is a software problem.

The screen states:
This system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress & log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost.
Shut down initiated by NT Authority\System.
Windows must restart because the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service terminated unexpectedly.

You then have about 1 minute before it reboots. My
question is: Is there any fix out there so I won't have to
pay to have it done? Also, why is Windows not paying for
all these computers to be fixed if it was there problem
for leaving an opening for someone to access. Why can't
they send an update or patch, etc. to fix this problem?
Does anyone have a way to fix this & will it keep it from
happening again?

I hope someone will be able to help me soon, as it
aggrevates me to pay cash for a new system that I cannot
use & then find out it will cost me extra to get it to
work again. I have not even had it for 2 months yet.

Apparently, your computer has an unwelcome visitor known
as the WM32 Blaster/Lovsan worm.

It entered your computer through your internet connection because the "firewall"
was not properly enabled and essential critical updates were not installed from
the Windows Update website. For instructions on fixing the problem, visit:

What You Should Know About the Blaster Worm

Remove W32.MSBlast.Worm

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

Kay,

To keep your computer from rebooting so that you have time to remove the
worm, install the patch, update your anti-virus definitions, etc., do this
....

As soon as Windows loads after a reboot, click the Start button, then Run.
Type the following into the dialog box:

shutdown -a (then click OK or press enter)

Then go here for detailed info and links to download the appropriate patch.

I found a link to a patch for this problem before my
computer shut down, unfortantly I cannot find the patch
again. But it is out there.
