Bug in Notepad?

I recently bought a new PC with Windows XP (service pack 1). I've noticed an
odd and rather annoying bug/feature in Notepad, which wasn't there with the
version of Notepad which I'm used to (in Win95).

I'm using Notepad with Word Wrap On. After I do a Save, I find that Notepad
has inserted carriage returns at the end of each line, so they don't wrap
properly, and, if I cut and paste a block of text to another program, I will
have unwanted carriage returns there too. Fortunately, if I close the file
and reopen it (or switch word wrap off and then on again), the carriage
returns disappear. But it's still a nuisance.

(I seem to remember experiencing the same problem with Wordpad too, but I
can't recreate it now. Maybe my memory is at fault.)

Has anyone else noticed this bug? Is there a patch or new version of Notepad
available to fix it? I couldn't find anything in the MS Knowledge base.

It's not true what you say. It doesn't do what you say it does. Send me two files, one normal and one wrapped with the extra CR/LF and we'll get to the bottom of it.

You mean it's not true on all systems. But it is true on mine. By the way,
my version of Notepad is "Version 5.1. Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service
Pack 1." Perhaps your version is different.

The problem only applies to the text in the window of the running program,
not to the saved file. So sending you the saved file would not help.

There is only one version of notepad for XP. Help - About give you the windows version not notepad's.

SP1 did update Riched20.dll. This is the Rich Text Control (max 2 GB data) (which wordpad has always used and 2000/XP used in notepad - 9x used Edit Controls [max 64KB data]). They work differently. Notepad is exactly the same format as Word with font selection etc forbidden. It works to the Riched 3 standard. Edit controls are a collection of characters, Riched aren't. You can read about riched controls at http://msdn.microsoft.com.

There is a later version that fixes Undo problems. What is the exact binary format. What formats are being put on the clipboard (paste special will tell you). What format is what ever taking when you paste (the default selection in Paste Special). I am unable to get any CR/LF out of notepad that aren't in the file.
