Hi, I am new to this, I have a gateway g6 350 that I have used from 98.
I need to upgrade but would like to reuse my 2 20 gig hd's stv sound card,
and sdram (1 256 meg 1 128 meg chip) and cdrw.....
So, what Mother board ? I would like to have both drr and sdram slots.
Thinking intel cpu.
Any bare bone systems out there, trying to keep this under $300 - $400

no one,

It's going to be hard to find a mobo that has both sdram and ddr slots. SOYO
does have some new and reconditioned boards for Intel processors in their
eShop but the are for older processors and if you can find them they are
more expensive than their newer processors.

I went through this myself recently and finally gave up and got a DDR slot
board. DDR memory is very inexpensive these days and the prices seem to be
dropping more and Newegg has a SOYO Intel board free after rebates.

I did find a ASUS board listed on the pcimicro site but when I decided to
order it, the board was not available. I think they had another board with
both kind of slots but it was an off brand.

That's a pretty tall order. First, you need to forget about reusing your
RAM. If you can find a mainboard with both, it will be a mainboard that you
do not want. But new RAM will cost you about forty bucks, up to $60 if you
want 384 or $80 if you want 512. That leaves you ~$300. From a G6 350,
just about anything would be a significant upgrade. But you'll need a new
case and power supply (at least a new power supply, which is most of the
cost of a new case anyway). I don't know what an stv sound card is. It's
possible the onboard sound of a new motherboard would actually be better.
But it shouldn't be a problem to use your old sound card in a new system, as
long as your old sound card is PCI. So basically, you need case, power
supply, mainboard and CPU for about $300. Then spend whatever you can
afford on DDR400 RAM to complete it. Let's see . . .

The following barebone system from mwave includes all that, and 512MB of
DDR400 Ram within your price range.

YB13 -BA14423 -BA20060 -BA19299 -BA08603 - - INTEL PENTIUM 4 - 478
SYSTEMS (BLACK)
Details (ENLIGHT 7250B; MSI 848P NEO-V; PENTIUM 4 2.4CG (800Mhz); KINGSTON
512MB DDR400; NO FDD / CARD READER; NO CDROM, CDRW OR DVD) $345.00 $345.00
Sub Total $345.0

Note the MSI mainboard, 800FSB P4 processor and Kingston brand memory. Not
sure about the power supply, but on a tight budget? You'd probably be happy
with it.

You also need to think about a video card. If you've got an older AGP
card, it might not be compatible with current mainboards. If you've got an
older PCI card, it's time to ditch that puppy. -Dave

It'll be very hard finding anything new that takes sdram and ddr. Not
only that, but you'll have to settle for an older CPU as well. Best bet
is to look second hand, like on ebay, from sellers that are getting rid
of their motherboard+cpu that they had left over from an upgrade. I
think bare bones systems generally come with motherboard+cpu+ram, so
you're probably better off just auctioning off your RAM on ebay and
putting the dollars towards your new system and operating system software.

Finding a 'new' motherboard that supports SDR SDRAM isn't easy and even
then it wouldn't support the current processor types.

Just how much of an 'upgrade' are you looking for? If you want to get a
'latest and greatest' then you're looking at a new motherboard, processor,
memory, PSU, and, most likely, case. All of which is doable for 300 to 400,
depending on just how fast a processor you want.

On the other hand, there is a rather simple upgrade for your G6 that comes
in at 70 bucks, or so: A 1.4 gig tualatin celeron (about $45. check
pricewatch) and a slot-t adapter ($20). Your board is listed as compatible.

A 1.4 gig tualatin (essentially equivalent to the P-III) would make for a
decent system at modest cost.

I'm not familiar with this case, but I have learned one thing and that
is to buy a quality case. You will NEVER regret it. Sure, it sounds like
a good place to save money but a quality case will make your build much
more enjoyable. I would recommend the following which are similiar in
price but almost certainly superior in quality:

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=BA20579
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=BA14403
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=140033

These have power supplies with an overall lower wattage, but they are
higher quality and should easily power the system you are building while
allowing for upgrades.

mwave.com, zipzoomfly.com and newegg.com are all highly recommended
sources, BTW

Memory prices will almost certainly fall before Christmas so I would
hold off. You already have 384MB and unless you are going to scrap the
SDRAM and buy 512MB DDR, I wouldn't buy any memory at this time.
