BT Virus dilema

I have been installing a BT SpeedTouch router on a mates computer. The
ADSL logs in and works fine, untill i try to use any antivirus or fire
wall software. Without the anti-virus software or fire wall the adsl
line works as right, except that viruses start flooding in to windows
of coures. If I clean the viruses of the system and try to run a fire
wall or antivirus software the internet just doesn't work. I have tries
Zone alarm, panda platinum security suire and AVG. And I have never had
this problem in the past installing adsl modems on other peoples
computers using BT adsl. Is this a marketing ploy so that BT can sell
their own Virus and Fire wall solution for £4.99 a month.
I also find it amazing that windows is practically an open system if
you haven't got any anti-virus software running. I had a virus download
itself and install in under 30 seconds after shuting down zone alarm.

If this is how BT are going to behave I thing I might get a proper NAT
enabled ADSL modem that doesn't hook into the back of the machine but
links to the computer via ethernet. Then put a decent version of linux
on the computer.

Well, it's nothing to do with the actual ADSL, I can tell you that much.
I thought almost everybody was on DSLMax now anyway?
Try a non-BT router.

You can't blame BT for this.
An unprotected, unpatched machine may have minutes to survive
before it's compromised.
What is the BT router model ?
Is it NAT'd ?
Was Windows up to date ?
Once infected, it can be difficult to guarantee to clean up - it might
be
better to start again.
The infection may have corrupted the TCP/IP stack. There are utilities
to fix this.

===========================
The SpeedTouch modem is NOT a router - it's a USB-connected ADSL modem.
