BSOD - Windows XP - 'Generic' DDRAM - Athlon XP2000+ - ECS KT600-A MOBO

Computer hangs and gives various BSOD errors - PAGE_FAULT or
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors.

I've tested the DDR RAM with Microsoft Windows RAM testing software
(extended test), and no errors were detected.

No peripherals are hooked up to it at all. The CPU temp runs at around
40degrees and uses the fan and heatsink that came with the Athlon XP retail
box.

Ordinarily I'd say the RAM (being cheapy crap) is stuffed, but since it
checked out ok with the RAM tester, I'm not so sure. The hard drive is an
old 8 gig thing, and I'm thinking it could be that - could HDD problems
cause these errors?

I've already changed the PSU and video card. Any ideas?

the RAM could still be bad...
try substitution

Last I had that problem was with windows 2000, when I was mixing two
different RAM speeds together (100Mhz & 133).
I'd still try swapping the ram with that from another pc if possible, just
to confirm it's not the ram...

You're not overclocking at all ?

MemTest86

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors.

This type of error is a Hardware error message from Windows. It might
be a RAM Error and it might be a motherboard Error. Try just one
stick of RAM at a time. Windows XP is very hard on generic Hardware
and substandard motherboards. Also try resetting the BIOS.

If you get this message it can be from overclocking, However some
hardware is not working properly. I have also heard that some
programs are not compatible with SP2 and can give this message.

Don't even bother trying MS Memory Tester, always use Memtest86
before ever booting the operating system.

The error could be due to driver bug, try updating drivers,
newest from respective chip manufacturer per each component or
subsystem.

If you suspect hard drive, scan disk for errors and check with
HDD manufacturer's utility (boot floppy).

Sorry, but that is not strictly correct. It might be hardware, but equally
it could be caused by an outdated driver (see
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm) for more details.

You cannot say it is categorically a hardware error, because it isn't.

Hi there,

Nope I'm not overclocking. Unfortunately I don't have any spare RAM sticks
to substitute it with (it's only 1 x 256MB stick). I'll try and use that
memory tester which suggested by some others.

Thanks for your reply.

I'll Memtest86, update drivers and scan the HDD, and get back to you.
Hopefully I can identify the cause!

Thanks for your suggestions.
